Elizabeth McIntosh was also known as Lizzie and Betty. The 1871 Census of Pictou County, Nova Scotia, Canada lists her as 25 or 35 and a servant. She is also listed in the 1901 Census for Bridgeville, (House 98) Pictou County, Nova Scotia, Canada. At that time she lived with her mother, Mary MacKenzie

The Presbyterian Witness, 29 May 1880, Vol. XXXIII, No. 22, p. 176, lists a marriage between Angus M. McArthur of Glengarry and "Libby" McIntosh of Springville by Rev. Charles Dunn at Stellarton.

Frank Calder 's book, “History and Stories of Springville - Pictou County, Nova Scotia” mentions a list of Woman’s Missionary Society Members in 1893 containing #14: “Mrs. Arthur (Angus) McArthur, Granny McIntosh’s daughter, lived just up Irish Mountain Road.”

Elizabeth McIntosh died as an inmate at the Pictou County Asylum, Riverton, Pictou County, Nova Scotia. She had been there for 10 months.

The headstone of Elizabeth McIntosh and Angus McArthur in the Springville Cemetery reads:

“In memory of Angus McArthur died Jan 7th 1899 aged 67 y’rs his wife Elzabeth MacKintosh died Feb 20th 1922 aged 86 yr’s”.
On 18 MAY 1880 when Elizabeth was 44, she married Angus MACARTHUR, son of Angus MACARTHUR & Catherine. Church of Scotland; Witnesses: Joseph Mckay and Donald Thomson; Minister: Rev. I received this email from my Internet friend, Betty Aube:

Hi Bill:

I found the marriage solemnized for Angus McArthur and Lizzie McIntosh at the library in New Glasgow. Angus was 45, Bachelor, occupation was a mason, was living in Glengarry at time of marriage, his parents were Angus and Catherine with occupation as School teacher.
Lizzie was 43, spinster, living in Springville at time of marriage, parents were John and Mary with occupation as farmer.
Their witnesses were Joseph McKay, not sure of first name(could be Samuel) but last name was Thomson and they were married by Rev. Chas. Dunn.

The 1881 Census of Middle River states that Angus McArthur was 48, male, and a farmer. His wife was Lizzie, 44, female. Living with them were Mary Ann ?, 60 and Hannah ?, 56 along with John Kennedy, 20, farm laborer.
3. William James McINTOSH. Born on 29 MAR 1838 in Springville, Pictou County, Nova Scotia, Canada. William James died in Springville, Pictou County, Nova Scotia, Canada, on 21 APR 1897; he was 59. At the age of <1, William James was baptized in St. Columba Church, Hopewell, Nova Scotia, Canada, on 19 FEB 1839. Occupation: Carpenter and Furniture Maker in Oxford (near Pugwash), Nova Scotia.
At the time of his marriage to Mary Tait in 1863, William was living in River Phillips., Nova Scotia.

It appears that William James McIntosh remarried. Nothing is known about his second wife, Isabell. Further investigation is necessary. Belle is most likely the child of William James McIntosh and Isabell.

Notice that the birth dates of William James McIntosh are all different (1838, 1840, 1831) on each census, but the birth dates of his children are the same.

I need to thank my Internet friend, Diane Shaw for providing the above Census information.

His obituary appears in the The Presbyterian Witness, Sat 1 May 1897, Vol. L, No.18, p.144: “McIntosh, William, died 21 Apr. at Oxford inis 59th yr., a native of Springville, Pictou Co.”
On 13 MAY 1863 when William James was 25, he first married Mary Jane TAIT, daughter of Alexander TAIT & Beriah TAYLOR. The birth record of their first born, William, says they were married 13 May 1864 at River Philip. Born on 27 APR 1840 in Mount Pleasant, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, Canada. Mary Jane died on 9 FEB 1881; she was 40. Gravestone says died Feb. 9, 1881 Aged 40 years.
Mount Pleasant, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia was a settlement north of Oxford. River Philip, where Mary Jane Tait and William James McInotsh were married, is a settlement located on the Philip River south of Oxford.
They had the following children:

The birth records of the children are kept at Mount Plesant, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, Canada.
bef 1891 when William James was 52, he second married Isabel.
They had one child:

4. Catherine McINTOSH. Born on 4 MAY 1840 in Springville, Pictou County, Nova Scotia, Canada. Others say Catherine was born 23 May 1842. Catherine died on 20 MAR 1935; she was 94. Buried in Riverton Cemetery, Nova Scotia, Canada. At the age of <1, Catherine was baptized in St. Columba Church, Hopewell, Nova Scotia, Canada, in 1840.
The following obituary appeared in the Eastern Chronicle, April 9, 1935:

“At 1 pm March 20, 1935 there passed from this earth to continue the life eternal, Mrs. Joseph McRay. Born at Springville, E.R. May 4, 1840, third eldest and last surviving member of a family of twelve children of the late John and Mary McKenzie McIntosh. Her husband pre-deceased her some 18 years ago. An adopted daughter passed away three years ago. Although confined to bed for the past four years, she bore with a great Christian spirit the weariness and many trials incidental to advancing years. Ever patient and uncomplaining, she endeared herself to all those about her. Her mind was alert to the end.

The funeral was held 1:30 pm March 22 from the nursing home of Mrs. Dan Sutherland, Riverton, where the deceased had made her home for the past nine years. The service was conducted by Rev. Dr. Young, assisted by Rev. D. Fraser and Rev. D. G. Ross. Hymns - The Lord is My Shepard, When this Passing World is Done - Solo by Mr. J. G. McKenzie. Mr. E. Spray - Women’s Assoc of St. John, Sharon. Carnations from her loyal friend Mrs. J. keith, Stellarton. Internment - Riverton Cemetery.’

Nancy Hattox, my Internet friend, says Catherine was born 23 May 1842.
On 8 SEP 1864 when Catherine was 24, she married Joseph MACKAY, son of Duncan MACKAY (1815-4 MAR 1883) & Ann CULTON (1813-6 FEB 1901). Witnesses: James and Robert MacKay; Minister: Rev. David Roy of the Presbyterian Church: Book: 1831 - Page: 2 - Number: 32. Born on 19 MAY 1842 in East River (Stellarton or Springville?), Nova Scotia, Canada. Joseph died in Stellarton, Pictou County, Nova Scotia, Canada, on 26 JUN 1912; he was 70. Main Street, Stellarton, Nova Scotia. Buried in Riverton Cemetery, Pictou County, Nova Scotia, Canada. At the age of 1, Joseph was baptized in New Glasgow, Pictou County, Nova Scotia, Canada, on 13 NOV 1843. Occupation: Miner, Plasterer, Carpenter. in Rev. Dand. Roy (possibly Rev. Daniel MacRae). Witnesses: Ja(mes) and Rob McKay.
Joseph and Catherine were listed as # 32 of Pictou County Marriage Records. They were married by the Rev. David Roy and the witnesses were James and Robert McKay.

At the time of his marriage, Joseph MacKay lived in Albion Mines, Pictou County, Nova Scotia, Canada. It is the town situated on the East River near the head tide. Albion Mines was the name given by the General Mining Association to their collieries by 1827. At a public meeting held on February 1, 1870, the place was renamed “Stellarton” after a high-oil content coal called Stella coal was found in abundance.

The 1901 Census shows Joseph's sister, Lillie, living with them. However, I think this was his sister-in-law, the wife of his brother Robert.

The headstone of Catherine McIntosh reads: “At Rest Joseph MacKay 1839-1912 His Record Is On High His Wife Catherine Mackintosh 1840-1935.” The backside of the headstone reads: “Mary S. Mackay 1821-1911.” This may be Joseph MacKay’s mother.
They had the following children:
23i.
Christy (-1887)
24ii.
Unknown (-1932)
5. James Robert McINTOSH. Born on 29 DEC 1841 in East Branch, East River, Nova Scotia, Canada. James Robert died in Roosevelt Hospital, New York, New York, on 9 AUG 1893; he was 51. Buried in Pine Grove Cemetery, Oxford, Nova Scotia, Canada. in Senior Member of the Firm Treen & McIntosh, Dominion Shoe Store. in Blacksmith. in Flour and Feed Store in Oxford, Nova Scotia. At the age of <1, James Robert was baptized in St. Columba Church, Hopewell, Nova Scotia, Canada, on 5 APR 1842. Occupation: Blacksmith.
The Presbyterian Witness (Saturday, 19 Aug 1893, Vol. LVI, No. 35, p.280) states:

"McIntosh, James R., merchant of Oxford, D. 9 August, at Roosevelt hospital, New York, formerly of Springville, Pictou, aged 51 years."

Another entry in the The Presbyterian Witness (Sat 19 August 1893, Vol. XLVI, No. 33, p. 261) states:

"McIntosh, James R., merchant, of Oxford, d. few days since, as a result of an unsuccessful operation in New York."

James lost an eye and afterwards worked in the Flour and Feed Store in Oxford.

James' obituary says he leaves four daughters and one son, J. WIlliam, but no names are given for the daughters.

James’ gravestone states: “James R. MacKintoch died Aug 9 1893 Aged 53 yrs. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course”.

It seems that James R. McIntosh married Nancy E. Patton on 20 July 1865 in River Philip, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, Canada. She died on 9 December 1869. He then married her sister, Amy A. Patton, on 4 July 1880 in Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada.

His obituary was published in The Easter Chronicle, 17 August 1893:

“James R. McIntosh, of Oxford, (the senior member of the firm of Treen & McIntosh, Dominion Shoe Store,) went to New York about two weeks ago to undergo a surgical operation. It was unsuccessful and a telegram was received at New Glasgow on Thursday last, announcing his death, and another was received by his brother, J. George, on Wednesday the 9th, in Providence, stating that he was dangerously ill. The latter immediately left for New York after receipt of telegram, but his brother was dead when he reached the city. The remains were brought to Oxford by his brother, and the funeral took place on Tuesday. Mr. McIntosh was the fourth of a large family, eight boys and four girls. He left his native home in Springville when about eighteen years old, and he resided in Oxford ever since. His mother, Mrs. John McIntosh, still lives on the old homestead. He leaves a wife, four daughters and one son, J. William, who has been in the Dominion shoe Store since it opened. The late Mr. McIntosh was fifty one years of age, and was married three times. In his younger days he was a blacksmith, but after he lost one of his eyes, he kept a flour and feed store in Oxford, and was successful in business. He was a consistent member of the Presbyterian Church, and respected in the community in which he made his home.”

Marlene Newhook, my Internet friend wrote this email to me in October 2005:

“I also looked at James’s Will which was signed by him in July, 1853, it lists his first wife and children. Date filed – July 28, 1893. I also looked up James’s marriage record for his second marriage in the Church Records for Amherst and found Nancy Patton as the bride’s name was easier to read.”
On 20 JUL 1865 when James Robert was 23, he first married Nancy E. PATTON, daughter of Robert Johnson PATTON & Sarah Ann KING. Book: 1809 - Page: 10 - Number: 112. Born in 1849 in Falmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada. Nancy E. died on 9 DEC 1869; she was 20. Buried in Pine Grove Cemetery, Oxford, Nova Scotia, Canada.
Nancy's headstone reads: The wife of R. B. McIntosh.
They had one child:

At the age of <1, Margaret A. was baptized in St. Columba Church, Hopewell, Nova Scotia, Canada, on 1 MAR 1844. there is a notation in the St. Columba Birth and Baptism Records 1827-1844 that reads Parents: John McIntosh and Mary McKenzie, Residence: Irish Mountain, Sex: ?, Child’s Name: ? Birth Date: 24 Nov 1843; Bapt. Date: 1 Mar 1844. Occupation: Dressmaker. Alias/AKA: /Maggie/.
Margaret and her husband John Connolly (also spelled Connelley) and their son, Albert W. Connolly, lived with Margaret's four brothers, Duncan,George, Alexander, and Steptoe in Providence in 1870. She is listed in the 1870 US Census as "keeping house". By the age of 36 during the Rhode Island Census of 1880 she was a widow. The same Rhode Island Census of 1880 (FHL Film#1255211, NA #T9-1211 Page 74A) lists the following persons living with Margaret: George B. Connolly (Connoley), nephew, Age 7, born in Rhode Island, father born in Ireland, mother born in Nova Scotia and Maggie Grant, no relation, tailoress, age 22, born in Nova Scotia, father and mother also born in Nova Scotia.

Margaret Anne Dodson, of Pictou, Nova Scotia noticed my post on the Nova Scotia Rootsweb website and we had the following conversation:

Bill Dorgan writes:

Looking for any information regarding the MCINTOSH family of Springville, NS. who emigrated to Rhode Island in the 1860-70s.

My GGGrandfather, Alexander Alfred MCINTOSH, born in Springville, NS about 1850. Died in Providence, Rhode Island on April 10, 1885 Married Elizabeth Jennet FRASER on March 5, 1874 in an Episcopal Church in Providence, Rhode Island, She was born in Hampton, Oneida County, New York about 1854. Died in Providence, Rhode Island on September 22, 1929. Alexander and Elizabeth had a son named Charles Leslie MCINTOSH.

Alexander's father's name may have been JOHN MCINTOSH, born about 1820 in NS. John married Mary ? They had five children who came to Rhode Island in the 1860s-1870s: Margaret, Duncan, George, Alexander, and Steptoe.

ANY INFORMATION on this illusive family GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Margaret Anne Dodson writes:

Hello Bill, This sounds like the McIntosh family of Springville. Mary McKenzie, daughter of William McKenzie and Flora McMillan who came from Scotland on the Sarah in 1801, married John McIntosh of Springville, and they had (according to my records) twelve children of which Alexander was the 11th, and Steptoe was the 12th. All I have on my file about Alexander is that he was a mechanic in Rhode Island.

I have some information on the rest of this family, and considerably more on the McKenzie family, of which I am a descendant. I'll gladly share whatever you're interested in, and help in any way I can from Pictou County.

Your 4th cousin twice removed (perhaps)
Margaret Anne Dodson

Bill Dorgan writes:

Dear Margaret Anne!

What a surprise!!! I had reached a dead end with the McIntosh family and you came to my rescue. Thanks a million!
I have a few questions to see if this is the right tree:

1. Does your database of the 12 children of John McIntosh and Mary McKenzie contain the following children in this birth order:

Margaret (born about 1844)
Duncan (born about 1845)
George (born about 1848)
Alexander (born about 1849)
Duncan (born about 1851)

2. This is what I have about Alexander Alfred McIntosh in my database:

Alexander Alfred McIntosh was born in Springville, Nova Scotia in 1849.
Springville was settled about 1780 by John Fraser and others. An extremely large stream which issued from the foot of a hill there suggested the name.
In 1878 it was described as being about 10 miles above New Glasgow and had two stores, a church, a school house and a Temperance Hall, lodge of Oddfellows and Sons of Temperance. On January 1, 1880, the new bridge was open for traffic. This bridge was built of old discarded rails of the Intercolonial Railway and was said to be the second bridge in Canada to be in like style.

Alexander appears in the 1870 US Federal Census of Rhode Island in the 1st Ward of the City of Providence, page 125. He was 21 at the time and is listed as a blacksmith. He is listed there with his three brothers: Duncan, George, and Steptoe, all born in Nova Scotia. All four brothers were living with their sister, Margaret, who had married John Connolly. John was born in Ireland. Margaret and John had a son named Albert W. Connolly who was 1 year old at the time of the census. Interestingly, Albert W. is listed as being born in Nova Scotia. If this is correct then the McIntosh's came to the USA in 1869.

Alexander A. McIntosh also appears in the Rhode Island State Census of 1875.
He is listed as a blacksmith. His place of birth is given as Nova Scotia of Irish parentage.

Alexander married Elizabeth Jenette Fraser. This is what I have in my database about Elizabeth:

Elizabeth Fraser resided in Providence, Rhode Island. She lived in Ward 5. She appears in the Federal Census of 1870 and appears on Page 045 of the Rhode Island Census. She lived at #45 Olney Street in Providence between 1890-1892.

The Rhode Island State Census of 1875 lists her as a housewife who was born in New York of Canadian parents.

Thanks again for your immense help. All of this sounds too good to be true!!! But that is the impetus for continuing to search for the illusive relatives, isn't it?

THANK YOU!!

Your Cousin, Bill Dorgan

Margaret Anne Dodson writes:

Dear Cousin Bill, I'm sitting here grinning after reading your note and checking against my database. NO DOUBT ABOUT IT!!

I wish I had exact dates and sources, but I'll give you what I have on my computer.

John McIntosh of Springville married Mary McKenzie of Centredale. She was born in Nova Scotia, the first of the family born in Nova Scotia. Five children had left Scotland with their parents, on the Sarah in 1801; only two survived the crossing, namely Isobel (chr. 22 Oct 1795 Killearnan, Ross-shire, Scotland) and John (b.1799 Inverness-shire, Scotland; my gr-gr-grandfather).

John and Mary McIntosh had twelve children:
1. Elizabeth/aka Lizzie, Betty/ m.. MacArthur

3.Hannah/ m. Edward Caffrey / d .20Feb1926, E. Prov. Rhode Island
4.Margaret/ m. Conley [added your info to my file/tks!]

Margaret A. married John CONNELLY. Born in 1840 in Ireland. in 1870 Laborer. Alias/AKA: /Connolly/.
John Connolly is listed as the Head of the Household in the 1870 US Federal Census. He said he was born in Ireland and valued his personal Real Estate at $200. His name is also spelled as Conley.
They had the following children:
30i.
Albert W. (1869-1875)

Walter J. (1871-1875)
7. Duncan David McINTOSH. Born on 8 MAY 1845 in East Branch, East River, Pictou County, Nova Scotia, Canada. Duncan David died in Oxford, Nova Scotia, Canada, in 1930; he was 84. Was on the census for 1870 US Census. Was on the census for 1871, 1881 Census. Buried in Pine Grove Cemetery, Oxford, Nova Scotia, Canada. Occupation: Carpenter, Mechanic and Joiner and Druggist in Oxford, N.S. according to the "Presbyterian Witness". Alias/AKA: Mackintosh.
Duncan is listed in the 1870 US Census of Rhode Island along with his brothers:

Duncan, 25, carpenter
George, 22, carpenter
Alexander, 21, blacksmith
Stephen, 18, blacksmith

Duncan is also listed in the 1871 Census of Pictou County, Canada as a joiner. He may have returned to Nova Scotia or his mother, Mary (MacKenzie) McIntosh, just included him because she couldn't get use to the idea that he was gone to the States! He does not appear in the 1880 US Census.

Duncan appears in the 1881 Census of Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, Canada along with his wife and one child living in his father’s house on Irish Mountain:

John McIntosh, M, Male, Scottish, 67, Nova Scotia, Farmer, Church of Scotland
Mary McIntosh, M, Female, Scottish, 65, Nova Scotia, Church of Scotland

Hannah McInotsh, Female, Scottish, 27, Nova Scotia, Church of Scotland

Duncan appears in the 1891 Census of Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, with his wife and two children:

Duncan McKintosh: 45
Jessie: 42
George: 15
Maggie: 4

Duncan also appears in the 1901 Census of Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, Canada along with his wife and two children. Maggie is named May M. or Mary on this Census:

Duncan McIntosh: 53
Jessey: 53
George: 24
May M.: 14

Duncan also appears in the 1911 Cesus of Cumberland, Nova Scotia, Canada along with his wife, his daughter, May Hills and his grand-daughter, Bessie M. Hills. There are also two boarders: Genevieve Brownell, born Mar 1896, age 15 and her sister Emma Thompson Brownell, born June 13, 1898, age 12.

Concerning this family, Isabel Richardson writes:

“I would say Maggie and Mary are the same person so I think George MacIntosh born 1875 and Nellie Wood born 1873 did not have a daughter, Margaret Mary MacIntosh BUT I think she was the second child of Duncan, 1845-1930 and Jessie 1849-1929. I think their children were:

George, born 1875
and
Margaret Mary born 1877

What do you think?

The information I had came from George Gormly (via Nedra Wilson to Vangie Way to me) and is his family tree but I still feel Margaret Mary is in the wrong place.  I tried on e-mail but it would not go.  In 2001 his e-mail was gormly98@tir.com and he lived in Jackonsville, Florida when he sent the information to Nedra at Roots.

So I moved Margaret Mary over as the 2nd child of Duncan and Jessie and still left her with the 2 marriages as already in.

Hope this is not too confusing and I would like to know what you think.

Isabel”

I think Isabel is right, except that Margaret Mary was born in 1886.
On 8 JAN 1873 when Duncan David was 27, he married Jessie Bell MacInnes, daughter of MacInnes & Margaret. Rev. G. L. Mitchel. Born on 4 FEB 1849 in Nova Scotia, Canada. Jessie Bell died in Oxford, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, on 4 MAR 1939; she was 90. Buried on 7 MAR 1939 in Pine Grove Cemetery, Oxford, Nova Scotia, Canada. Occupation: Housewife. Alias/AKA: Nellie M. McInnes/Jessie Belle McInnis.
The gravestone reads:

They had the following children:
32i.
George Morrow (1875-1934)
33ii.
Margaret Mary (1886-1978)
8. Dr. Donald McINTOSH. Born on 8 MAY 1846 in Springville, Pictou County, Nova Scotia, Canada. 1901 Census of Canada for Cumberland County says: 26 OCT 1847; Death Certificate says 26 October 1846. Donald died in Pugwash, Nova Scotia, Canada, on 10 FEB 1932; he was 85. Buried on 12 FEB 1932 in Palmerston Cemetery, Pugwash, Nova Scotia, Canada. Occupation: Physician at Pugwash, Nova Scotia. Alias/AKA: /Daniel/.
Donald McIntosh was a physician who had a general practice in Pugwash, Nova Scotia. He attended the medical school at Harvard University between 1870-1871 and graduated with an M.D. degree. He appears on page 458 of the "Directory of Former Students of Harvard University Living in 1919 - grads and non grads."

Here is another entry for Daniel McIntosh from "Pictonians at Home and Abroad", chapter 4, Pictonians in the Medical Profession:

Alexander Alfred McIntosh was born in Springville, Nova Scotia on 3 April 1850. Springville was settled about 1780 by John Fraser and others. An extremely large stream which issued from the foot of a hill there suggested the name.

If this is correct then the McIntoshes came to the USA in 1869.

Alexander A. McIntosh also appears in the Rhode Island State Census of 1875. He is listed as a blacksmith. His place of birth is given as Nova Scotia of Irish parentage.

Alexander A. McIntosh appears in the US Census of 1880 (NA Film Number T-9-1211, Page 74A). He is listed as 29 years old, born in Nova Scotia, a blacksmith, married, and whose parents were also born in Nova Scotia.

Alias/AKA: MACKINTOSH.
Albert S. McIntosh (always spelled MACKINTOSH) was instrumental in the purchase and building of the Pine Grove Cemetery in Oxford in 1871.

The Oxford Journal, Thursday, March 2, 1872 published this article which highlights Albert Scott Mackintosh:

Pine Grove Cemetery Established in 1871

Here are a few items which may be of interest to the citizens of Oxford in connection with the Oxford Pine Grove Cemetery and which seem to be the first records available in this connection. On April 26th, 1871, a meeting of citizens of Oxford and vicinity was held in Scotia Hall for the purpose of considering the advisibility of procuring grounds for a "grave yard", as it was then called. The following committee were appointed to select suitable sites and obtain prices on same. Committe appointed was John ROBB, Rufus THOMPSON and John H. GILROY, who later reported as follows: Locations, Sand Hill, Geo. D. HEWSON, $5.00 per acre; Valentine WOOD, Black River Road, $4.00 per acre; James M. THOMPSON, Lower Main St., $10.00 per acre. At a later meeting it was resolved that this committee purchase two or three acres from Valentine WOOD on the Black River Road and a resolution was passed that the purchase money be raised by subscription and $11 was subscribed on the spot.
On June 9, 1876, a meeting was held, Wm. Rufus SMITH being appointed chairman and D. B. STEWART secretary for the evening. Mr. John ROBB, as secretary of the committee previously appointed, gave a detailed account of the previous meeting, with his financial statement at that date, after which he tendered his resignation as secretary.
Wm. DUNSMORE was then appointed as secretary and Rufus WOOD as trustee. After disposing of the business in connection with the cemetery, the chairman introduced the naming of the streets of the town. The matter of Fire Protection was also laid over to be considered at a later meeting. In May, 1886, another meeting was held in the school house for the purpose of discussing cemetery matters and other matters of general interest to the town, I. J. HINGLEY being elected as chairman and A. S. MACKINTOSH as secretary.
Mr. John ROBB, as treasurer, reported that a number of lots in the cemetery had been sold and the land fenced with a pole and barbed wire fence, leaving a balance on hand of $28.00, less a $5.00 note on the Bank of P.E.I., which bank at that time had become defunct, leaving a net balance of $23.00 in the treasury. After some discussion, Mr. ROBB agreed to act as treasurer for another year, providing Mr. DUNSMORE be appointed to sell lots and that he be allowed a 5% commission on all moneys collected.
The matter of naming the different streets was then proceeded with and the following streets were named at this meeting, viz.: Main St., Water St., Waverley St., Duke St., Prince William St., Ellis St., James St., Rideau St., Hanlan St., Jackson St., and Elm St. (date May, 1886). The matter of Fire Protection was again laid over for future consideration.
Again on Feb. 12th, 1890, a meeting was held in the school house to appoint a committee to apply for an act to incorporate the Oxford Cemetery, and J. S. HICKMAN, A.S. MACKINTOSH and Wm. DUNSMORE were appointed and empowered to engage a lawyer, if necessary for this purpose, and on the 15th day of April, 1890, the Oxford Pine Grove Cemetery was duly incorporated, according to an Act of Parliament.
Mr. A. S. MACKINTOSH was then appointed president and John C. MCCORMICK appointed secretary-treasurer and James STEWART, caretaker.
For a number of years the cemetery company drifted along, it becoming difficult to get a quorum to hold a meeting, until the president, Mr. MACKINTOSH, conceived the idea of getting younger men on the board of trustees, and through his efforts and influence the following were added to the Board of Trustees, viz., T. M. JOHNSON, president; S. A. MARCHANT, S. B. PATTON, G. M. MACKINTOSH and J. S. VABUSKIRK. This was on May 20, 1924.
Shortly after this it was resolved to have some additional clauses and admendments added to the act of incorporation to levy and collect certain taxes from lot owners to cover the expenses and general upkeep of the Oxford Pine Grove Cemetery. And on April, 1928, the additional clauses and amendments, having been prepared by the trustees, aided by their solicitor, were forwarded to the Legislature, legally passed and added to the incorporation act.
At this time a charge was made of $2.00 per lot for the upkeep of the cemetery. After a few years the condition of the cemetery had been greatly improved and it was possible to maintain it in good condition.
In recent years Pine Grove Cemetery was greatly enlarged by obtaining land south of the cemetery from Kenneth GORDON. A receiving vault was built several years ago, where committal services are now held, so that burials can be delayed until spring.
Present president of Pine Grove Cemetery Corporation is Perce H. SWAN, who succeeded R. D. RUSSELL as president last year. J. D. MCGREGOR has been the efficient secretary for several years.
On 7 APR 1881 when Albert Scott was 25, he first married Estella S. MOORE, daughter of William MOORE (1832-) & Mary MILLER. By License: Methodist, Witnesses: J. R. McIntosh and A. S. Ward. Book: 1809 - Page: 197 - Number: 46. Born on 15 MAR 1859 in Oxford, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, Canada. Estella S. died in Oxford, Nova Scotia, Canada, on 13 JAN 1904; she was 44. Buried in Pine Grove Cemetery, Oxford, Nova Scotia, Canada.
The Presbyterian Witness (Sat 23 Jan 1904, Vol. LVII, No. 4, p. 32) states: "McIntosh, Mrs. Albert S., d. 13 Jan at Oxford, after a long illness, her maiden name was Stella S. Moore. She took a deep interest in life of the community and work of the church. She leaves a husband and 4 children."
